Fifty-three percent believe in the existence of spirits or ghosts 73 percent in life after death. A 2007 survey found that 20 percent of Americans aged 50 and older become frightened when they think about what happens to them when they die. Death is a constant shadow hanging over everything we do. We're troubled by the idea of our own mortality. ![]() Most humans, however, aren't so easygoing. In Mesopotamian legend, Gilgamesh returns home and happily accepts his life as a mortal man. On the journey home, a hungry snake devours the plant, ending any hope Gilgamesh has of becoming immortal. Gilgamesh eventually falls asleep, but Utnapishtim still rewards him with a plant that has the power to rejuvenate its owner. Utnapishtim promises to grant Gilgamesh immortality if the hero can stay awake for a week. His travels bring him to Utnapishtim, a human who has been allowed by the gods to live forever. When Enkidu dies, the great hero becomes haunted by the prospect of death and sets out on a quest for immortality. Gilgamesh, however, remained just as mortal as any other man, including his best friend Enkidu. A product of Mesopotamian literature, Gilgamesh was the son of a goddess and a human king. In other religions, humans were created as mortals who tried, but failed, to achieve immortality. ![]() As their punishment for disobeying God, Adam and Eve experienced both spiritual and physical death. She then took the fruit to Adam, who also ate it even though he knew it was wrong. Unfortunately, Satan, speaking through a serpent, tricked Eve into eating the fruit. God told Adam to take care of the garden and harvest fruit from any tree - except the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. The first man and woman lived in the Garden of Eden, a perfect place. According to the Book of Genesis, God created Adam and Eve to take care of the world He had created and to populate the Earth. The fall of Adam and Eve is the classic example, chronicled in the Bible. In almost all cultures and religions, humans were first created as immortal beings who fell from their state of perfection. Before you can have the Grim Reaper - a personification of death - you have to have death itself. When we're done, you'll know who the Grim Reaper is (should you spy him lurking by your deathbed), how he works and, most important, why he exists at all. We'll also examine how painters, writers and filmmakers have portrayed the Reaper in their works. We'll address all of these questions on the next few pages. We'll look at the origin of the Grim Reaper, the symbolism associated with his form and figure, and how he's represented in other cultures. But why did humans feel compelled to make the Grim Reaper, well, so grim? Why not make him a friendly and helpful guide to the underworld? And why, for that matter, does he have to be a guy? Ultimately, this is the "job" of the Grim Reaper - to put a human face on the concept of death. It may not be a pleasant image, but it is clear and unmistakable. When it does, he collects the soul with a well-practiced cut of his razor-sharp blade. He comes for every person, hourglass in hand, waiting for the last grain of sand to fall. We all know exactly who he is and what he wants. He will be likely returned to Miami-Dade to deal with the violation charge.Enter the Grim Reaper, the black-cloaked, scythe-wielding personification of death. But he had no concealed weapons permit, police said, telling them "it's expensive." When officers spoke to him, Sullivan told them he had a loaded gun in his pocket. He was arrested on in West Kendall according to the Miami Herald, accused by Miami-Dade police of aiming a gun at passing vehicles. Sullivan also now lists a Gulfport address. ![]() I gave it another shot, but it just wasn’t what I was looking for. I had used Digicel Flipbook back in animation school, however (probably mostly due to the lousy computers there) it had a tendency to crash every 2.5 minutes and drove me absolutely crazy. Unlike the early 2000s, I knew that I had a few more options in front of me, so I set out to see what might be best. When I created this cartoon, I had to break it up into several pieces because Flash destroyed the audio sync by the end of several minutes of video. The straw that broke the camel’s back, though, was when I discovered there was a limit to the number of frames a project could have. It’s propensity to crash, the terrible, TERRIBLE drawing tools that “auto-correct” your lines to be no where near the lines you intended, occasional tweens that broke every symbol in every layer in the file. Fast Forward Eight Years.Īfter almost a decade of working with Flash, the quirks of the program were mostly known to me. And for that I will forever be grateful to Macromedia and their little interactive-web-media. The audio was crude, everything was stiff and lifeless, and there are a few visual tangents in there that make me want to go back in time and punch myself in the face, but I was finally doing what I had always dreamed. I worked several freelance jobs designing logos and marketing and used the proceeds to buy a copy of Flash 5, immediately diving into the world of animation! Well, I perhaps should put quotes around “animation” as my early attempts seen here are barely animated at all. I first began animating after seeing and learning of this magical program that would let even a simpleton like me live that glorious dream I had always wanted to live. Or truthfully I should say if it had not been for MACROMEDIA Flash version 5. It is very likely that I would not be “an animator” if it had not been for Adobe Flash. Who really likes reading an editorial that plays it safe, though? Today I’ll be telling you why as an animator, you shouldn’t touch Adobe Flash with a ten-foot pole, and if it’s on your computer right now the “Delete” button should be your next move. To keep your lawn chairs looking fresh and in tip-top shape, why not repair broken or damaged pieces and simply re-web your lawn chair when it’s in need of a little pick-me-up? But over time, the material may begin to break away and fray. Most lawn chairs on the market are made to hold a significant amount of weight. Sure, we will always love a good patio sofa and the oh-so buttery soft outdoor cushions that sit atop it. Here’s to lawn chair weather and fixing things. If there is one thing that you will never hear us complain about, it’s the strides outdoor furniture has made over the years towards becoming as “indoor-like” as possible. That’s it! The twill tape is thin enough that I didn’t need to use an awl to get through the webbing, and so far anyway, it’s holding up beautifully. I used 3-inch cotton twill from the Ribbon Factory and stretched it as taut as I could to make it comfy. (Up in Maine, Julie O’Rourke recently re-webbed her little guy’s chair this way.) If your chair uses screws and washers, the technique is very similar and the above video shows both methods. My chair was made with clips that had gone rusty, so I recycled them and bought a shiny new set from Lawn Chair USA. + Lawnchair Clips (or screws and washers!) Even if you don’t opt for a cotton monochrome look like I did, opportunities for repair (and lounging) are virtually endless. Here are the basic details in case you decide to go in for a lawn chair rescue as the weather warms up. A few months later, it’s still holding up. I followed the basic instructions from Lawnchair USA, pushing the metal clips through the cotton tape just like I would have the nylon. After weaving one seat and not loving it, I tucked the chair into the closet for a few months and busied myself with other projects, but in February I pulled it out and tried again, this time using cotton twill tape and a new set of lawn chair clips. My original plan was to recreate a basketweave seat out of cotton clothesline, but I found the weave to be too bulky to feel comfortable. I scoured sidewalks for a cast-off folding chair to spruce up all summer, and put out a call on our local Buy Nothing Group, but it wasn’t until we moved in September that I found what I’d been searching for: a lightweight aluminum folding chair with nylon webbing that had started to fray. ![]() We’d bring colored chalk and balls and send up small blessings for a nearby spot to get out late-day wiggles. We still lived in our old apartment, four flights up without a patch of outdoor space to call our own and so in the afternoons we’d walk the kids around the block to a stretch of wide sidewalk in front a shuttered school building. Last spring, when the weather warmed but the virus still raged out of control and playgrounds and parks were closed, I dreamed of a folding lawn chair. |
